Potential homebuyers in the Duke City have a new resource to turn to.

Santa Fe's Homewise, a nonprofit offering services including financial education and coaching, real estate services, affordable mortgage lending and down payment assistance, has completed the move into the Orpheum Theater Building.

Director of Albuquerque Operations Elena Gonzales said she is glad the nonprofit now has a home of its own.

"It goes along with our mission," Gonzales said. "Strong neighborhoods make a great city."

Located at 500 2nd St. SW in the Barelas neighborhood, the 22,000-square-foot Orpheum Theater was built in 1898 and was one of the state's first movie theaters. New Mexico Bank & Trust helped Homewise finance the building purchase, which Gonzales said was made in summer 2017. The nonprofit declined to disclose how much it paid for the facility.

The building includes a community classroom and performance space, apartments, gallery and office space. Homewise spent around $2 million on construction and is seeking another $300,000 to finish renovations. Albuquerque-based Insight Construction and Sam Sterling Architecture built and designed the facility, according to Gonzales.

The Albuquerque Community Foundation committed $250,000 to the project as part of an impact investment, Business First reported.

The 33-year-old nonprofit employs 30 in Albuquerque and 60 at its Santa Fe headquarters, 1301 Siler Road, Gonzales said. Homewise announced in January it would add thousands of square feet and new jobs at its Santa Fe location.

Homewise reported net assets of over $42 million at the end of 2016, according to tax filings.
